Minimal surfaces have attracted a lot of attention in differential geometry and lead to very interesting nonlinear problems. Following a program that goes back to Uhlenbeck, we will discuss the gauss equation on a hyperbolic surface that arises when one prescribes the conformal structure and the second fundamental form. We will see that such a problem has at least two solutions. If time permits we will discuss a “dual” problem, for which existence and uniqueness of solution can be derived.
