A dynamical system can be view as a Markov chain, however the transition matrix takes the form of a Transfer operator with a very singular kernel. It is appealing to try to apply the same ideas that are successfully employed to study Markov chains to study Dynamical Systems, however this requires to understand the spectrum of the Transfer operator. In the last 15 years a new approach has been developed systematically to this end and is now yielding manifold results. I will try to illustrate this point of view, some of the results obtained and some open problems.
