Since 2010, INVOLCAN (Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias) plays a key role in the scientific development of the Canary Islands as well as in the worldwide volcanological community.
The main tasks of the institute are the monitoring of Teide volcano (Tenerife) and the development of different projects of scientific research and reduction of volcanic risk in the Canary Islands. Alongside with the scientific projects, the work at INVOLCAN is addressed to the reduction of volcanic risk in the archipelago (integrated with an extended educational activity) and the participation in the development of geotourism activities taking advantage of the canarian volcanoes.
Today, one of the main scientific topics of INVOLCAN is the geothermal exploration of the Canary Islands developed with seismic tomography and magnetotellurics. The latter technique enables a 3D modelization of the subsoil resistivity, evidencing the presence of fluid and hot materials and enabling the possibility to detect the presence
of magmatic chambers and aquifers.
