A great experimental effort has been devoted to the direct search of Dark Matter and a new generation high sensitivity experiments are currently under development. There is a wide range of observational evidences suggesting that the gas and visible stars in each galaxy are immersed in a larger halo of non-luminous matter which nature is totally unknown. From both astrophysical and particle physics considerations, stable and heavy Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) candidates that arise naturally from extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics are particularly compelling. The resolution of the dark matter "puzzle" is of fundamental importance to cosmology, astroparticle physics and elementary particle physics. In this talk I will review the current experimental scenario.
